Sorimuthu Ayyanar Temple
Travel for 61 km from Tirunelveli to reach the famous Hindu temple Arulmigu Sorimuthu Ayyanar Temple. The temple makes its place amidst the Papanasam and Karaiyar Dam. Adjoining the temple is River Thamirabarani, which flows by its side. The temple worships Lord, Mahalinga Swamy. Sorimuthu Ayyanar is the most worshipped god of the region. People see great faith in him. The temple is derived its name from the word- ‘Pon Soriyum Muthiar’, which means the Lord who pours down golden rain on the plateau. The temple also worships Muthianar with his two consorts – Pushkala and Poorna, Ayyappa’s lieutenants, Sangili Bhootham, Thoosi Madan, Thulasi Madan, Pechi, Isakki and Pattavarayan, Vinayaka, Bhairava and Devi. The temple sees unique offerings in the form of wooden legs and the cloth doll. The persons suffering from joint or leg disorder and the ones expecting for a child also make prayers here to get their wish fulfilled. The temple holds great faith in the hearts of the people. The temple has many interesting stories relating to it. The purpose of worshipping the kind of god has been explained. Festivals- The temple commences grand celebration during Ashada Amavasya. The temple sees great gathering during this period.
