Shrine Basilica Bandel
The Basilica of the Holy Rosary aka The Bandel Church is one of the oldest Christian churches in West Bengal. This holy church stands as a memorial to the Portuguese settlement in Bengal.
The Construction of the church is thought to be around 1660 and is dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary.
One can see a ship’s mast in front of the church. There is a story behind keeping the mast here. People believe that the captain of a ship, who was rescued from shipwreck by Mother Mary, presented the ship’s mast to the church.
The church holds holy shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary and Our Lady of Happy Voyage. It was declared as a Basilica in 1988 by Pope John Paul II.
