Rajayatna Tree
Mahabodhi Temple complex, on its south-west, holds the holy Rajayatna tree. It is a huge banyan tree and it holds the religious importance as it is believed that in the seventh week of his enlightenment, Lord Buddha spent his time meditating at this location. It was under this tree that Lord Buddha attained ‘Nirvana’. The place makes a sacred spot for the devotees visiting the temple. The age of the tree is estimated to be around 2500 years and there is a senior Botanist to take proper care of the tree. Plucking leaves or picking its twigs are strictly prohibited as this tree carries deep emotional and religious values.
