Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park
Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park aka The Darjeeling zoo was established on August 1958. The famed zoo sees its location in the Birch Hill neighborhood of Darjeeling. The park aims in preserving the wildlife of the Himalayan range and also to showcase its beauty to the people to contribute to protecting them. The zoo is tucked high up at an altitude of 7000 feet, making it the largest high altitude zoo in India.
The park is a famed ecological place in over the world. It has helped to repopulate many species of mammals and has contributed a lot to wildlife preservation and protection. The park is visited by most of the tourists visiting Darjeeling because of its wide collection of the fauna and tranquil environment.
The zoo this adorned with endangered species like snow leopards and red pandas, and also other species as Asiatic black bear, barking deer, leopards, blue and yellow Macaw, Red Panda, Eastern Pangolin, Pheasant, Himalayan Wolf, Lady Amherst, Macaw, Red Jungle Fowl, Himalayan Monal, Royal Bengal Tiger, Sambar Deer, Temminck’s Tragopan, Yak, Leopard Cat, and many more.
This famed zoo also holds the prestige of winning “The Earth Heroes” award, this was presented to it in 2014, leaving behind over 300 zoos worldwide.
