Kolhapur
Kolhapur, a city in Maharashtra, is well known for Kolhapuri chappals. It is well connected by all modes of transport to other parts of the state. It houses a lot of temples, which are architectural marvels in themselves. This attracts Hindu pilgrims in large numbers throughout the year.
Starting with Mahalaxmi Temple, it was made in reverence of Goddess of wealth- Laxmi and dates back to the 7th century. A kilometer from here is the Binkhambi Ganesh Temple which, as the name suggests, is dedicated to Lord Ganesh. Also in the name is its quality- it stands without a pillar. Another architectural wonder lying on the banks of river Krishna is Kopeshwar Temple. It is a temple devoted to Lord Shiva. It has a good public infrastructure with respect to street food and public toilets around the place for the ease of tourists.
Apart from fulfilling one’s religious fancies, Kolhapur takes him for a ride of serendipity. Rankala lake, built in the 19th century by Chhatrapati Shivaji is a gorgeous spot to watch the sun die in the arms of a soothing evening. If you still want some action, it gives you the option to go for boating and horse-riding. Since almost every city in Maharashtra has something for a history buff, how can Kolhapur not join the league? Chhatrapati Shahuji Museum is one of India’s oldest and displays ancient sculptures, weaponry, paintings, jewelry, etc. The magnificence of both the museum and the grand life that it preserves is worth an experience. While there, one mustn’t miss Maharaja’s Palace, where the present king of Kolhapur resides. Panhala Fort is worth a stroll too.
So in all, Kolhapur makes for a perfect historical trip and serves serenity with a dash of action. The local food and handicrafts of Kolhapur are really famous too.
