Indian Parliament, is the highest legislative authority in India, consists of the President and two houses: the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha. Situated on the northwestern side of Vijay Chowk, the Indian parliament encompasses two structures. The original building, designed by Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker, was opened in 1927. In May 2023, the new parliament building was officially inaugurated.
Old Indian Parliament
The Parliament House is a remarkable piece of art crafted with pillars and spherical supports. Its design is believed to be influenced by the Chausath Yogini Temple in Madhya Pradesh. The building spans about 170 meters and is supported by an impressive array of 144 pillars on the first floor, each pillar measuring around 27 feet. Among its features are a total of 12 gates, with the main entrance being Gate 1.
New Indian Parliament
The recently constructed building has a triangular shape and consists of three floors, covering a total area of 64,500 square meters. It boasts three ceremonial entrances, each positioned on one of its three sides. These entrances are designated for the President, Vice-President, Lok Sabha Speaker, and Prime Minister. The building proudly features a Gandhi statue and prominent national symbols. With a built-up area of around 65,000 square meters, the new structure serves as a representation of India’s rich heritage. It skillfully captures the liveliness and variety of contemporary India.
