Edwin Lutyens was the man who designed the India Gate in honor of 90,000 soldiers who lost their lives during world war I. Amar Jawan Jyoti is also an important part of India Gate it was built later as a tribute to the soldiers who gave their lives during Indo- Pakistan war.

There are ideas to build a National War Memorial next to the India Gate shelter, along with a National War Museum near Princess Park. Some changes were made to the canopy near India Gate, which was also created by Edwin Lutyens. Initially, there was a marble statue of King George V placed under the canopy. However, the statue was later taken away from there and relocated to Coronation Park.

India Gate is not only a war monument the Republic Day at India Gate shows the significance of the monument. The President visits India Gate every year on the Republic Day.

How to reach India Gate

You have convenient options to reach India Gate from various parts of Delhi. Regular DTC buses connect the monument to major areas. For a quicker journey, the metro is a popular choice. The nearest metro station is Central Secretariat, found on the yellow and violet lines, just 2 km away from India Gate. From there, a short auto-rickshaw ride or a pleasant walk can get you to your destination.

You can also consider Barakhamba Road and Pragati Maidan metro stations on the Blue Line. These are around 3 km from India Gate. You can easily hop on an auto-rickshaw from these stations to reach the memorial site.

Nearest Airport is Indhira Gandhi International Airport which is 24 km away from India Gate

Nearest Railway station is New Delhi railway station which is 5 km away.

Activites and Places to Visit

  • Boating at India Gate  

India Gate is surrounded by beautiful Lawns, fountains and lakes. It provides an opportunity for boating. The boating club provides pedal boats as well as row boats at reasonable prices.

Timings: 2 PM to 9 PM

Entry Fees: ₹50 per person for a ride of 15 minutes while for a 30 minute boat ride, the charges are ₹100 per person.

  • Children’s Park at India Gate

Another delightful attraction near India Gate is the Children’s Park. It’s a fantastic place for families to explore, especially with kids. The park offers a range of fun activities for children to enjoy. You’ll find exciting features like the Jungle Book theatre, an enchanting aquarium, a lively amphitheatre, advanced gaming experiences, and captivating musical fountains.
