Fort St.George
Fort St. George or the ‘White Town’, as popularly called, was established by the Britishers as their Headquarters. The Britishers built this structure to have a hold over the southern states if India. The magnificent fort was of great importance for the British rulers as it was their center for various administrative activities. The fort also encompasses a church- St. Mary’s church, which is considered to be the oldest Anglican Church in landmasses east of Suez. The fort has a museum too. The church and the museum are now open for the common people. The museum houses much uniqueness of the British era like weapons, letters, coins, silverware, ceremonial dresses, medals, some personal items of the fort residents, etc. The magnificent fort is now under the Archaeological Survey of India and also an important station of the state Government. The Tamil Nadu government commences legislative assembly here.
Timings- St. George Museum: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Closed on Friday)
St. Mary’s Church: 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Monday – Saturday)
Regular masses commence on Sundays.
