Darjeeling Himalayan Railway/ Darjeeling Toy Train
The 2 ft gauge railway that runs between Darjeeling and New Jalpaiguri of West Bengal is the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway or Toy Train or DHR. It makes one of the must-do activities in Darjeeling.
The construction of this train began in 1879 and was completed by 1881. The train is about 88 km long and was built with the aim of ease of transportation of commodities between the plain stations.
This famed train now enjoys a special listing by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee as a World Heritage site. It has been serving as a major connection between the cities, their cultures, trade, and communication.
The train has been a hot topic of discussion because of many reasons. Firstly, it serves as a gateway to the spectacular Himalayas full of mystery/ imagination. Secondly, this tiny 4 wheeled steam locomotive of the 19th century has remained as living legends for sounds, fragrance & magic of the bygone era.
