Attukal Bhagavathy Temple
Attukal Bhagavathy Temple, aka, Sabarimala of women is a shrine in Kerala, India. Only women are allowed to enter the temple during pongala. Attukal Temple is situated within 2 kilometers of the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram. Pongala preperation by thousands of women devotees in the temple courtyard is the main highlight of the temple. The chief priest to the temple goes around carrying the sword of the Goddess, blesses the devotees, sprinkles holy water and flower petals on them, procession of the deity’s idol, Thalapoli, Kuthiyottam, Caprisoned elephants, Chendamelam, Nadaswaram, Kumbhamkudam, Classical music recitals, Bharathanatyam, Mohiniyattam, Kathakali. Deity of the temple: Goddess Bahagavathy.
Best Season:
‘Ponkala’ is the most important festival of Attukal Bhagavathy Temple and is a very special temple practice in the southern Kerala. The ten-day- long celebration commences in the Malayalam month of Makaram-Kumbham (Feb – March)on the Karthika star.
