Buxa Fort

Buxa Fort in the Buxa Tiger Reserve, Alipurduar district, West Bengal is located at an altitude of 867 meters. The fort is said to be used by The Bhutan King earlier. The fort served to protect the portion of the famous Silk Route connecting Tibet with India, via Bhutan.

The fort holds a remarkable history. It has seen the rule of many including the Britishers over it. Through the times it underwent many renovations too. The earlier fort saw its framework made from the wood and bamboo which was then strengthened by the use of stones.

This fort was later used as a high-security jail and confinement camp in the 1930s. The jail was so much inaccessible and impenetrable that it was regarded to be the 2nd most protected jail succeeding the Cellular Jail in Andaman.

This makes a good place for history lovers to pay for a visit.
